CHAOUEN

Chefchaouen, an enchanting Moorish town, lies in the heart of the Rif mountains just one and a half hours drive inland from Tangier. Perched on the side of a mountain it overlooks valleys of farms and forest covered mountains. Also known simply as Chaouen, it looks a little like an Andalucian village painted in every shade of whites and blues... with friendly locals and a sand coloured Kasbah in the centre of the old town where the red-hued walls enclose a beautiful garden and a small folk museum. The main square in the centre of the medina (Plaza Uta el-Hammam) is a delightful place to sip fresh orange juice or mint tea and look at the mountain peaks, the Grand Mosque and the 17th century ruins of the Kasbah walls that run along one side of the square.

Visitors to Chaouen can marvel at the local handcrafts still made by traditional methods, stroll around the Medina with its narrow cobbled streets, barter with the locals selling hand-made leather goods, woven cloth, pottery and ceramics, watch local carpenters work as if time had stood still, be flooded with the most delightful aromas of spices and herbs and freshly baked bread from wooden ovens, or try the locally produced olives and cheeses.

There are many small hotels and hostals offering very economical prices. The main hotel is the Parador (no connection to the Paradors in Spain), and offers very comfortable accommodation with swimming pool, adjacant to the main square in the old part of the town (see map on right). There is also an abundance of restaurants surrounding the square offering local and international cuisine.

The province of Chaouen offers magnificent landscapes for all types of outdoor activities such as hiking, excursions on horseback or mule, mountain-bike, cycling, canoing, rafting, fishing or caving.

Chaouen is small and manageable and is an essential visit for tourists touring Morocco. (See interactive map).
